  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg (room temperature)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup sanding sugar (for rolling the cookies)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, beat together shortening, sugar, and egg for 3-4 minutes until creamy. Mix in boiled apple cider.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and allspice. Gradually add to wet mixture on low speed until combined.
  3. Cover dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Shape chilled dough into tablespoon-sized balls and roll in sanding sugar.
  5. Place on lined baking sheets and bake for 9-11 minutes. Let cool on wire racks before serving.
